Abstract RE and PV Research and Implementation in South Africa
Presenter:  Tobias BISCHOF-NIEMZ, SOUTH AFRICA

Presenter's biography:
Tobias Bischof-Niemz was until recently employed as Chief Engineer in the Energy Planning department of Eskom. There he worked on renewable system integration topics in the IRP planning context, and he developed a concept for how to stimulate the rooftop PV market in South Africa without putting municipalities' financial stability at risk. In a second role, Tobias supported Eskom's Renewables Unit in the development of a 150-MWp PV portfolio to be built nationwide for self-consumption purposes, the so called "Eskom Ilanga PV" project. Before he joined Eskom in March 2012, he worked as a consultant for The Boston Consulting Group for five years. At BCG he was an expert for renewables and developed investment strategies and roll-out plans for major electric utilities, mainly in Europe. On his private account, he owns and operates several small rooftop PV installations in Germany, where he rents the roof space on long-term lease agreements and receives financial compensation from the German Feed-in Tariff scheme.
